A top Ukrainian court said today it has suspended the results of this month's presidential election, pending review of an appeal filed by the declared loser.

In a statement, the High Administrative Court said that it has suspended the Central Election Commission's ruling announcing that Viktor Yanukovych has won the February 7 runoff election.

The results showed Yanukovych winning by just 3.5 percentage points.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Yanukovych's rival, has refused to concede and is challenging the election result in court.

Tymoshenko alleges mass violations in the election, but international observers described the vote as generally fair and democratic.

Parliament this week agreed that Yanukovych should be inaugurated on February 25.

The court today said it was not in a position to rule on this issue and prevent him from being inaugurated.
